Chapter 17

“Did George and Shirley and the boys say they were allergic to anything?” Mama Nell asked as we began our grocery shopping.

“Nothing. No allergies. I think the only thing they’re allergic to is standing still. I’ve never seen such a hard working family in my life.”

Mama Nell gave me a withering glance. “What are we? Chopped liver?”

I threw my arm over my face. “Oh please, not chopped liver!” I stopped the dramatics and picked up some Cheerios off the shelf. “I was thinking something like perogies with ham and onions and of course cheese, then a Greek salad so we’ll have to get a lot of Feta, and some blueberry cheesecake for dessert.”

“So basically anything with cheese?”

“Oh right. That’s a lot of cheese. Maybe apple pie?”

“But we can’t have apple pie without a slice of cheddar!” Mama Nell moved to the other side of the aisle. “Makensie! Look at this! Our coffee beans are on sale. That’s massive! We pay close to twice this on the coast.”

I helped her put eight packages of coffee beans in our cart.

“You buy four and I’ll buy four. That way we’re within the limit. What do you think of a big lasagna, Greek Salad, a tray of deli meats and grapes? We could make it all up the day before and pop the lasagna in the oven when the boys have their morning coffee break.”

“Croissants,” I said. “What about those mini croissants filled with a seafood salad for snacks in the morning. Or is that too weird? Let’s make some muffins and then they’d have a choice. I sure hope Harry and Jay made it out of the mall alive.”

“Oh Makensie. You can be so dramatic at times, but yes, I get what you mean. The way they dashed out of the food court was a good idea. Jay texted me and said that the grandmother must have cloned Harry’s phone, because the more she thought about it, the more she realized that Eunice would suddenly turn up ‘out of the blue’ at different places. Like when Jay and Harry decided to go and get a nice bottle of wine, who should be standing outside the liquor store, but Eunice.”

“Wow. So you and Jay text? I’m jealous. I thought she was my friend.”

We continued shopping and I noticed for the first time a deli counter in the back of the store. “Say Mama, we could just order up a tray? Look at these!” Even though I had eaten, my mouth was watering as I drooled over the meats and cheeses and mini quiches on one of the trays.”

“Look at the prices, Makensie. We have a couple of days before we need to have everything ready. Plus I know we can make a fancy tray cheaper. It might not look as pretty, but we can definitely do it cheaper.”

The young woman behind the counter overheard our discussion and nodded. “If you have that much lead in time, you can definitely make up your own platters.
